Why Aren't Millennials Achieving The Desired Level Of Success In The Workplace

Just a few days ago, I overheard two young team members discussing how, despite putting in a lot of effort, they were unable to complete the project assigned to them because another team member delayed specific deliverables. One of them was actually depressed because her manager did not take her out for coffee during her break time. In our office hours, we hear and sometimes participate in this conversation.

When I checked these two team members' records, I discovered that they had only been in the system for three months and had been assigned responsibilities accordingly, with little or no view of the overall progress of the project. However, the fact that they are already depressed raises concerns.

What Causes These Young People To Feel Unemployed?

I disagree with the popular belief that millennials are self-absorbed or less hardworking. However, I am convinced that their ambitions and dreams are not grounded in reality. They live in a bubble, and when it bursts, they tend to believe the world has come to an end. Furthermore, they have been repeatedly taught that happiness or success is achieved through external rather than internal factors.

Throughout this generation, we have set goals for ourselves. We have, however, failed to help them understand that happiness or success is not only about achieving the goals set for them, but also about being happy about it. However, their journey and success should not always be compared to the success of others.

The generation that values flaunting whatever they have on Facebook and Snapchat has grown accustomed to constantly comparing images rather than personalities, and they allow these images to define their lives for them.

This causes them to be either overconfident or extremely unhappy, with the latter being more common than the former. They continue to move even when they are in a fantastic location.

What can give this millennial generation a sense of accomplishment, success, or happiness? Perhaps it is to take a more inward approach and to have a vision. Goals that are written without an idea have little to no meaning. Create a vision statement for yourself in your current role and set goals accordingly.

“Life is a long road with many signs. Don't complicate your mind while riding through the ruts. Run away from hatred, mischief, and jealousy. Don't bury your thoughts; instead, make your vision a reality. Get up and live”
